Roberto Clemente Award

puerto rico 1
The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Miami Marlins are now scheduled to play a two game series in Puerto Rico on a day that is very dear to my heart, Roberto Clemente Day. I grew up hearing about the legend that was Clemente, my mother having grown up a baseball fan in Pittsburgh in the 1950-60’s. Needless to say he was her favorite player. I’ve got some funny stories about a little girl at the ballpark about that but those can be told another time. She remembers school shutting down for game seven of the 1960 World Series when Bill Mazeroski […]

Pirates, Marlins to play in Puerto Rico on Clemente’s Day

Stephen Vogt, catching, free agents
I BELIEVE IN STEPHEN VOGT!! There’s a chance you may have heard of Oakland Athletics’€™ All-Star catcher Stephen Vogt; there’€™s also a pretty good chance that you haven’€™t. He would have been 81 this year, his birthday being just weeks ago on August 18. He passed at the age of 38. Clemente has his own day in Major League […]

Retire #21: Another Roberto Clemente Story (but better!)

On Friday the winner – or winners in this case – for the prestigious and coveted Roberto Clemente Award were announced. 2014 marks the first year that there have ever been two co-winners of the award. He wowed fans in the 1950’s and 1960’s, leading the Pirates to a World Series victory in 1960. He collected this 3,000 hit in what would be his last ever ballgame.  Clemente was a humanitarian off the […]
