C.J. Wilson

Joe Smithfifth starter, Shoemaker, Angels
Who will be the Angels’ fifth starter in 2016?  It’s been well established that the Angels have a lot of starting pitching depth. In fact, if the season started today they would have eight pitchers capable of starting in C.J. Wilson, Jered Weaver, Garrett Richards, Andrew Heaney, Hector Santiago, Matt Shoemaker, Nick Tropeano and Tyler Skaggs. It’s extremely likely that veterans Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson will be in the starting rotation regardless of the fact that both have regressed in recent years. Weaver, a three time All-Star from 2010 to 2012, has never been a hard thrower and in […]

Four Angels pitchers to compete for fifth starter role

true ace, Garrett Richards, fifth starter
Do the Los Angels Angels have a true ace? The Angels have a long list of starting pitchers from which to choose for their 2016 rotation. Los Angeles has eight capable starters in Garrett Richards, C.J. Wilson, Jered Weaver, Andrew Heaney, Hector Santiago, Matt Shoemaker, Nick Tropeano and Tyler Skaggs, but not one of them can be called a true ace. Overall, their starting pitching has plenty of depth, but not much strength at the top. Their starters’ look like a handful of number-threes with guys coming off of rookie seasons and players coming off of injury. The team does not appear […]

Angels rotation has depth, but no clear ace

Every team has had a window to win a World Series Championship at some point during their history. By window, I mean having the right collection of great players at the right time. For the most part, a team needs a superstar along with a good collection of supporting players, a solid pitching staff and a bullpen that won’t blow the game in the late innings. This is also most often combined with having a strong farm system in case of an emergency, and young players to bring up to replace aging ones. Windows can stay open for a few […]

Is the Angels’ Championship window closing?

It seems the Los Angeles Angels are confused about who to use as the fifth member of their starting rotation. They’ve had a fairly stable rotation throughout the season with 24-year-old rookie left-hander Andrew Heaney stepping up in the month-long absence of three-time All-Star Jered Weaver, who was out with a hip injury and now taking the place of C.J. Wilson, who recently had season-ending elbow surgery. However, with Heaney in the rotation full-time alongside Garrett Richards, All-Star Hector Santiago and Weaver, it’s the inconsistency of 28-year-old right-hander Matt Shoemaker that the Angels are having misgivings about. Shoemaker was sent […]

Should it be Matt Shoemaker or Nick Tropeano for Angels?

Matt shoemaker, angels, Joe Smith
The Los Angeles Angels are likely currently praying that they can stop their 6-16 game skid tonight against the Kansas City Royals or at the very least, when they begin a four-game series against the 55-60 Chicago White Sox on Monday night. They currently sit three games, three and a half should they lose tonight, behind the Houston Astros in the American League West. The Rangers are creeping up on them in the West sitting only a game (or potentially a half-game) behind them and the Angels are clinging to a Wild Card spot tied, just above the Rangers and […]

Angels demote Matt Shoemaker, now what?

unusual week in mlb, mike scioscia, los angeles angels 3
I think everyone thought that terrible actions and words thrown at Josh Hamilton by the Los Angeles Angels organization were over now that he had been traded to the Texas Rangers. We were wrong. Manager Mike Scioscia had to say his piece, even when the Hamilton saga was already over. Just to revisit the completely classless way the Angels handled Josh Hamilton’s admitted relapse. Keep that in mind as I continue that he came forward before being caught, prepared to take the suspension that would surely be thrown at him. Or so he thought.  An independent arbitrator ruled that Hamilton […]

Mike Scioscia had to get in one last dig at ...

Nothing would make me happier for Josh Hamilton than for this rumor to be true, that he may be returning to Texas, and for all I know it may be. The way that the Los Angeles Angels organization has treated Hamilton, through his relapse on cocaine and alcohol and his subsequent divorce from wife Katie, has been atrocious, unbelievably rude and unfeeling. The Angels sure know how to kick a guy when he’s down. The Angels have made it know that they do not want Hamilton back after he finishes recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.  First they would LOVE not to […]

A homecoming for Josh Hamilton?
