A.J. Andrews becomes first woman to win a Gold Glove, but is it progress?

Does Andrews’ historic win make woman closer to playing baseball or was it just to keep the status quo? No, it wasn’t on FOX’s new show “Pitch.” No, this time the woman who was recognized, she wasn’t a coach or a commentator, and no I didn’t have a weird dream but Friday night Rawlings gave away a Gold Glove Award to a GIRL. Her name? A.J. Andrews. Funnily enough, no I don’t watch “Pitch” and obviously she didn’t win it playing in the major leagues but A.J. Andrews does play in the only professional softball league in the United States, […]

Braves make first free agent signing of the year

The seal has been broken by the Atlanta Braves. They’ve made the first free agent signing of the offseason; R.A. Dickey. The #Braves today agreed to terms with R.A. Dickey (@RADickey43) on a 1-year MLB contract for the 2017 season with a club option for 2018. — Atlanta Braves (@Braves) November 10, 2016 Dickey, who turned 42 on October 29, was a first round draft pick of the Texas Rangers – way back in 1996. He spent a significant amount of time playing for the Rangers, New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays with short stints in Seattle., Milwaukee […]

OTD in Baseball History: Bo Jackson hits his first MLB HR

Hey everyone nice enough to read my blog! 🙂 I know I’ve been missing in action the past week or so! I just wanted to let you know that I had some home/family stuff that needed to be dealt with but that I am definitely back with some OTD in Baseball History (see below!) for ya!  But just so you know, you can expect my regular daily posts from FRSN’s Today’s Knuckleball, beginning with a new piece on A’s rookie Jharel Cotton, as well as pieces written exclusively for this blog on a daily basis once again so you can keep […]

Trio of rookies pitchers could be the key to A’s future success

Rookies Manaea, Mengden and Overton may be key to A’s future  The Oakland Athletics have historically been at their best when their starting rotation led the way for the rest of the team.  The importance of a strong, healthy starting rotation helps even a mediocre bullpen or offense not be a crucial as they would be without a good rotation. The A’s have won with stellar starting rotations, decent bullpens and decent offenses. The majority of the time it’s been pitchers from the A’s farm system that have come up to the majors to end up leading the team to […]

Socks Girl’s seven takeaways from MLB Week 11

Socks Girl’s seven takeways – Week 11 Well, I made a promise to myself and my blog to write my seven takeaways from the week every  Monday and I’ve already broken it by missing not just week nine but week ten as well …. I know, I know. Terrible – who can’t keep up with that?! But somehow it would be Thursday and I’d not done one yet … and so it goes …. but honestly, it’s not that easy when you are constantly writing for work and then want to spend some time with your loved ones – away […]

A quick BBST update!

Just a quick BBST update! Just a quick update on what is going on with me! Sorry to interrupt your baseball reading but I just wanted to let everyone know that I will now have two Twitter accounts – one for my work at Fan Rag Sports Network and Today’s Knuckleball in which I won’t be overtly cheering for my Oakland teams. Being that my job is to cover the Athletics, I can’t be so overly biased on social media. I’m not biased in my columns on the network, however, I can’t go around (as much as I’d like to) […]

Buyer Beware: Should Cespedes get a big free agent contract? 2

Should potential buyers be weary of signing Yoenis Cespedes? Yoenis Cespedes had a couple of unbelievable months in August and September after being traded to the New York Mets from the Detroit Tigers. In fact, he’s had a very good year on the whole, batting .291 with 35 home runs and 105 RBI combined between his time with both teams. However, once October hit and Cespedes stepped on to baseball’s biggest stage, he hasn’t been the same player the Mets had during the second half of the regular season. His offense has gone downhill since the National League Division Series, […]

The managers and executives shuffle

It appears that all but one vacant manager positions were filled within the last week, most within the last couple of days. The San Diego Padres fired former manager Bud Black in June and the Miami Marlins fired manager Mike Redmond in May and made the bizarre choice to put general manager Dan Jennings in his place. That did not work out as the Marlins went 71-91 (55-69 with Jennings as manager) in 2015. Now Jennings is out of a managerial job as well as his general manager job.  News of the end of Jennings’ tenure with the Marlins was reported […]

There’s a lot NOT to love about Daily Fantasy Sports

A few reasons why I don’t like Daily Fantasy Sports Ok, I’ll admit I’ve played in a few fantasy baseball leagues and even a football one over the past few years, however, I’ve never played Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS). So many things surrounding the idea of them bug me – here’s the short list: They make people believe that they will “get rich quick”  They charge people money to play – except for that first time so that  hopefully (for them) you’ll get hooked They cater to the “gotta have it now” masses  Their websites are not informative at all […]

David Ortiz is NOT happy! Workman suspended, Price is not?!

Alright, first off I know many people have written about this story including my co-editor at Call to the Pen Steven Engbloom but I HAD to throw in my two cents in (AGAIN!! I already wrote on the subject) because well – this is freakin’ ridiculous in my opinion!  The entire situation was literally centered around Tampa Bay Rays’ starter David Price. Yes, I understand that the reason he was not suspended was probably due to the fact he was never ejected from the game. That alone is ridiculous – he hit TWO batters – David Ortiz and Mike […]
