Non-tendered players, the free agent pool just got deeper

What is the non-tender deadline, anyway?

Wednesday night marked the 2015-2016 non-tender trade deadline.  What exactly does that mean? Well, it’s the time when a team has to decide which arbitration-eligible players they want to tender contracts to. If a player is tendered that the team and the player will eventually either come to an agreement on a contract before the arbitration deadline or they will be given an arbitration hearing date in which an independent arbitrator will decide for the salary the player has asked for and the salary the team has offered. Before this happens, teams and players come to an agreement somewhere in between the player’s salary demand and the teams offer. However, sometimes negotiations do come down to a hearing.

Non-tendered players automatically become free agents, thus deepening the free agent pool. A player is non-tendered when the ball club decides that the player is not worth the salary they paid him last season and therefore do not want to enter into the arbitration process which results in a pay raise for that player.
