The A’s had already been targeting Alonso near the season’s end and approached the Padres regarding the first baseman back in early October. However, the Padres demanded that Pomeranz be part of the package for Alonso.

However, come December, executive vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane and general manager David Forst decided they wanted a solid first baseman who’s excellent on defense. Actually, according to Forst, Alonso’s defense is, “one of the best in the game.”
