Athletics quiet as deadline passes, rebuild farm system

In 2014, the MLB world was rocked, and Oakland shaken, when it awoke to A’s left fielder Yoenis Cespedes having been traded to the Boston Red Sox for left-handed starter Jon Lester on July 31. Beane and Boston GM Ben Cherington had made a trade that no one could have predicted or seen coming.

A year later, Oakland had already done what had been expected of them by the July 31 Trade Deadline. They’d been expected to trade away their pending free agents in left-handed starter Scott Kazmir, super-utility man Ben Zobrist and fill-in closer/set-up man Tyler Clippard. The team followed through as predicted.
