MLB announced the final vote winners for the 2015 All-Star Game on Friday
and the winners are ….. you’ll have to read on and see!
Voting for the All-Star game has changed multiple times since the first Mid-Summer Classic was held in 1933 for a multitude of reasons. Managers first picked the teams and the fan voting that began in 1947 has changed for various reasons over the years (such as ballot stuffing, etc.).
Now each year the fans vote in the players they want to start the All-Star Game, the players get to vote in the reserves and the manager of each All-Star team gets to choose the starting pitcher out of the pitchers that have been voted in by the players.
That leaves one remaining spot on each team. Five candidates from each league are chosen and the fans and teams have a week to campaign and vote for their favorite player to make it onto the All-Star roster via the #FinalVote. I’m sure you’ve seen the hashtag floating around.
The AL candidates for this year’s final vote were:
- Brian Dozier, 2B, Minnesota Twins
- Mike Moustakas, 3B, Kansas City Royals
- Yoenis Cespedes, OF, Detroit Tigers
- Brett Gardner, OF, New York Yankees*
- Xander Bogaerts, SS, Boston Red Sox
*Gardner was added to the AL All-Star reserves roster prior to the final vote count because Royals’ outfielder Alex Gordon suffered a groin injury Thursday that will render him out for the next eight weeks. Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles will start the game in Gordon’s place.
The NL candidates for this year’s final vote were:
- Johnny Cueto, SP, Cincinnati Reds
- Carlos Martinez, SP, St. Louis Cardinals
- Troy Tulowitzki, SS, Colorado Rockies
- Clayton Kershaw, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers
- Jeurys Familia, RP, New York Mets
Surprising isn’t it to see the great Kershaw on the final vote and not starting the game? The truth is however, that, 2015 has not been the superstar’s best season.
It hasn’t been a bad one either but apparently it wasn’t enough for the players or fans to recognize because the winners of the 2015 All-Star Game Final Vote were announced my Major League Baseball on Friday afternoon. And they are
Mike Moustakas of the Kansas City Royals for the American League
Carlos Martinez of the St. Louis Cardinals for the National League
Congrats to both players!*
*(Although I was voting for Dozier and Tulo so I’m not particularly stoked and something tells me that most of Los Angeles isn’t too please either! LOL!)
Along with every member of both All-Star squads!
The All-Star Game will be hosted by the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ballpark this Tuesday, July 14, 2015 live on FOX at 7:30pm.
