Cubs send top prospect Kris Bryant to minor league camp

Monday, after all the controversy, it became official. The Chicago Cubs sent third baseman Kris Bryant down to their minor league camp.

He wasn’t the only one of their top prospects to be sent down. Shortstop Addison Russell was also cut from big league camp and second baseman Javier Baez was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Bryant’s status had been under scrutiny recently. The Cubs are demoting this spring’s home run leader so that they can keep him an extra year.

If Bryant started the season in the big leagues he’d have enough service time to be eligible for free agency a year earlier than if the Cubs start him in the minors and call him up in a few weeks.

Personally, I think it’s a load of crap and is certainly unfair to the kid who has hit .425 with nine homers and 15 RBI in 40 at-bats this spring but that’s just my opinion …. You can read my less opinionated post on this story go to Baseball Hot Corner via the link below:
