Utility infielder Nick Punto was recently released by the Oakland Athletics which is very uncharacteristic of the team. The A’s decided to eat the $2.75 million that they still owed Punto.
That’s something the A’s do not usually do and just last season they deemed him worthy of a two-year contract.
The move was also odd as Punto did not have a particularly bad season hitting .207 in 73 games with the Athletics. .207 is low, there’s no doubt there but Punto provided decent defense in an otherwise poor middle infield for Oakland.
