Royals agree to minor league deal with Ryan Madson

Right-handed reliever and former closer, Ryan Madson, hasn’t pitched in the Majors since 2011 when he was with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Kansas City Royals announced Sunday that they have agreed to a deal with Madson who has contacts in the Royals organization. He’s worked with two guys in the Royals front office. Jim Fregosi Jr., and Mike Arbuckle were scouts for the Phillies when Madson was drafted.

Fregosi is now a special assistent to Royals’ general manager Dayton Moore. Arbuckle is a senior advisor for the Royals. Fregosi signed Madson out of the 1998 draft and Arbuckle was the scouting director for Philadelphia when Madson was selected in the ninth round of the draft.

Madson may have had a little help in getting into talks with the Royals, but his numbers when healthy are what really helped him get this deal. Madson signed a minor league deal with Kansas City with an invite to Major League spring training.
