Tuesday the Tampa Bay Rays signed free agent shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to a one-year $8 million deal, pending a physical.
With Yunel Escobar quite capable of handling the shortstop position, the Rays will most likely move Cabrera from shortstop to second base. Second base is often manned by Ben Zobrist, a guy former Rays’ manager Joe Maddon, called a “super utility man.”
With Zobrist about to turn 34 and entering his last season before free agency, he’s suddenly become an even more valuable trade chip for the Rays.
