ICYMI: 2014 Platinum Glove Awards: Yadi and Gordon get the honors

The Platinum Glove Awards are given to the best defensive player in their respective leagues.

Platinum Glove Awards are a step above the Gold Glove Award which is a high honor but being the single best defender in either the National or American League, rather than just at your position, is a huge accomplishment.

This year, not surprisingly as he is one of the best catchers I have ever had the priviledge to see play, Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals took home the award for being the best defensive player in the National League.

Molina has won the last seven N.L. Gold Glove Awards at catcher. He’s also appeared in the last six All-Star games. If you are unfamiliar with Molina that should give you an idea of just how good the 32-year-old catcher is.

As for the American League, Kansas City Royals’ left fielder Alex Gordon, 30, recieved a Platinum Glove Award to put next to his four career Gold Glove Awards. He’s made All-Star appearances in both of the past two seasons.

The Platinum Glove Awards are presented by SABR and are based upon a combination of fan vote and the SABR Defensive Index.

Gordon led the way in the A.L. with 21.6 % of the vote, according to MLB.com, just beating out his teammate, catcher Salvador Perez and also, Dustin Pedroia of the Boston Red Sox who came in third.

As for the National League, Yadier Molina won for the third time in four years winning with 20.6% of the vote. The award has only been handed out four times.

He just beat out New York Mets center fielder Juan Lagares and shortstop Andrelton Simmons of the Atlanta Braves.
