Aldrete also played for a number of other teams in his career including the (then) California Angeles, Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees.
He owns a career slash line of .263/.356/.377, but he had his best season in 1987 hitting .325 in 126 games with the Giants.
Aldrete, 53, has beeen a coach with the Cardinals for the past seven years in different capacities, but most recently he serve as their bench coach.
Prior to working with the Cardinals Aldrete worked on A’s manager Bob Melvin’s coaching staffs in both Seattle as the first base coach and in Arizona as the Diamondback’s hitting coach.
Aldrete still had a year left on his contract with the Cardinals according to Slusser however coming back to California was a big plus for Aldrete who is from Carmel.
His wife Gina and family still reside in the Monterey Penisula area. Aldrete’s brother Rich, 49, who played Minor League Baseball and went into coaching at the Aldrete Baseball Academy in Seaside and at California State University Monterey Bay.
**On a personal note I was Aldrete’s nephew Carter’s preschool teacher at the Monterey Youth Center approximately 12 years ago, which is kind of cool since I recently read that Carter, a junior at Monterey High School, has already committed to play baseall at Arizona State even though he had the opportunity to play college football at a number of other schools.
A three-sport athlete, Carter won’t be able to officially commit to ASU until November 2015 but the kid I knew as a four-year-old, has chosen baseball, which I must say makes me extremely happy!
It’s actually pretty crazy because at the time I was commuting back and forth on a daily basis to attend the home games during the A’s 2002 20-game win streAk!
Anyway, needless to say I am excited that Carter’s uncle has signed on to coach my favorite team in the world!!! 😀 Oh and I’m proud to have been the first teacher for a kid who grew up to excel in both school and sports! It’s doubtful he remembers me but if he did it would be as one of a pair – Miss Jen and Miss Juli! lol!**
