Oscar Taveras dies in tragic car crash on Sunday
Oscar Taveras, a 22-year-old top prospect for the St. Louis Cardinals, was killed in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic on Sunday. Taveras’ girlfriend, Edilia Arvelo, also passed away in the accident. She was only 18 years old.
This is just tragic. I don’t really feel too much like writing this like an article, Regardless, here are some facts regarding the deceased young man.
Taveras was ranked the number three propsect in all of baseball by Baseball America going into the 2014 season. He made his big league debut on May 31.
Taveras played in 80 games for the Cardinals in 2014 batting a modest .239 with three home runs and 22 RBI. He hit a home run in the NLCS for the Cardinals. They ultimately lost to the San Francisco Giants but it was still a moment to remember.
It was a pinch-hit home run off Jean Machi in Game 2, which helped lead the Cardinals to their first and only win of the series. Overall he played in seven of the nine Cardinals 2014 postseason games and went 3-7 in pinch-hitting appearances.[mlbvideo id=”36800103″ width=”400″ height=”224″ /]
That’s extraordinarily impressive to just come off the bench and go 3-7. It’s certainly not an easy feat and despite his .239 season average, Taveras truly was an amazingly talented young baseball player.
It is such a tradegy to lose someone so young and so talented. My heart goes out to his family in the Dominican Republic, Edilia’s family and to the entire Cardinals team and organization.
Losses such as this are incredibly hard and I will be sending out all my positives vibes their way so that they can recover from this over the offseason.
