The Miami Marlins placed catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the seven day concussion list Sunday. The cause for the concussion has not been disclosed, which is quite curious to say the least. It wasn’t something obvious that happened in game -that much we do know. The catcher was not removed from Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
This move by the Marlins brings to the forefront some questions – did the he actually suffer a concussion? If so when? Or are they somehow covering up the fact that “Salty” just hasn’t been performing to their expected standards?
While I doubt that is the case and am sure that there is something going on with the 29-year old catcher, one does have to wonder. It’s a strange, sudden, unexplained and unexpected move.
Saltalamacchia, who hit .273 with 14 home runs and 65 RBI for the Boston Red Sox last season, has been slumping lately after getting off to a very good start in April. He finished April batting .299 with five home runs. In May Salty batted just .177 with only a single homer.
23-year old prospect J.T. Realmuto was called up from Double-A Jacksonville and veteran Jeff Mathis is expected to recieve more playing time during Saltlamacchia’s absence. Realmuto tweeted about the call-up this morning,
Got to call my family today and tell them that my childhood dreams were coming true.. Never felt so blessed! Thank you all for the support!!

Hopefully the Marlin’s will announce the cause of Saltalamacchia’s 7-day rest. For now we all just have to wait and wonder.
